I’ve been wanting to sit down and write this post for weeks now but life has seemingly got in the way. Of course the intention was to send this out with our 5 year anniversary email but I was probably off cleaning a toilet in some studio, manhandling a piece of furniture or subbing a class with day old underwear. It’s a miracle if I can brush my hair (side note: I recently had a birthday party to attend and my husband watched as I meticulously and painstakingly applied foundation and mascara, combed and curled my hair while complaining the whole time, “I don’t know how women do this.”) Working ladies, I commend you for doing this every damn day, I don’t know how you put pants on, yet alone apply a full face of makeup. Throw kids into the mix and I can’t even...Moms--you are unsung superheroes that deserve a freaking medal for holding your shit together. Girl Power.
People say to me all the time, “I don’t know how you do it, run three businesses with all you have going on?” Usually I brush it off and say thank you but the truth is, I don’t do it alone and it’s important that you know that. Allow me to explain.
For those who don’t know our story, it’s important that you do. A about six years ago right before I had the idea to start this crazy venture, I was sitting at a desk job miserable in my life. I had overdosed on one too many unhealthy relationships, I was feeling stuck financially-living paycheck to paycheck and emotionally I was all over the place. I remember calling my mom ugly crying every morning on the way to work because my body would physically revolt. Today I couldn’t be more thankful for the shitty relationship, the “okay” job and the fact that I could barely buy groceries because they pushed me to explore the deeper parts of myself.
I started to teaching fitness classes at a local dance studio to help keep my mind (and body) moving. This is where it’s important that you understand that the universe is mysterious and brings very important people into our lives even when we don’t know just how much they will play a key role in our life. That local dance studio happened to be owned by Ms. Angela Beyer, our now Lead Instructor/Master Trainer. Little did I know that 5 years later she would play such a key role in the success of our studios.
As my classes grew at the studio, it was one of the only things that brought me joy during such a tumultuous time in my life. I decided I had nothing to lose and opened our first studio in a sweet little town called Rehoboth. It’s also important that you know I had no idea what I was doing, like at all. Life has a funny way of helping you create what you want, even if you don’t know what you want. As ridiculous as this is going to sound, there were no business plans--only the ones felt deeply inside my being.
Over the next two years I began to see the magic that surrounds us IF WE CHOOSE to rise to the occasion of stepping into one’s own power. I’ve seen an environment of carefully cultivated women express and empower themselves physically, emotionally, mentally and most important spiritually. I’ve met incredible people with stories that need to be shared. Your story is never too boring, too crazy, too unthinkable to be told--you are a brilliant piece of the universe’s creation and your experiences are worth sharing. I’ve been fascinated by countless women who continue to inspire me every single day.
So, if we make it look easy and or glamorous it’s important that you know it’s mostly smoke and mirrors and there are countless players in our game that keep the show running even when things get rough.
To my mom, I am forever grateful of how you raised Kayla and I. Without your knowledge and encouragement we wouldn’t be where we are today. You’ve inspired me to live my life into the unknown and appreciate the gifts and magick of the universe.
To my sister Kayla, my biz partner in crime-you mean the absolute world to me (and you drive me insane too haha) but I couldn’t imagine MBB without you. Thank you for helping me keep it all together when I can’t get my head out of my ass. Your badassery is unrivaled and you are an essential piece of our puzzle and better half of MBB. Your gifts and talents shine loud and hard. I can’t wait to see where they lead you.
To my Dad, I’m so much like you it scares me (and mom too haha) but I am grateful that I somehow got your “go-get-em”. Thank you for sharing your genes with me.
To my husband Shawn, you are an absolute rock in my life and I am so grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you for understanding my late nights and for being the cook. Thank you for being my on call handyman and psychologist.
To Ms. Angela Beyer, thank you for leading our team of instructors with compassion, kindness and the firmness we all need from time to time. Thank you for giving my silly little barre class a chance.
To Ms. Chantelle Davis-Gray, our marketing guru extraordinaire. Thank you for texting me even when I don’t text you back, whether it’s to check on me and make sure I’m alive or if I need to smarten up and complete a marketing email by its due date. You help keep me on my toes. I’m so proud of all you have accomplished with your Coaching Business and your leap of faith from corporate to freedom.
To Ms. Katrina Idreos, watching you grow as an instructor has been such a beautiful experience for Kayla and I. I am SO proud of you and look forward to your continued success at MBB.
To all my ladies having babies, Tania, Kaci, Kendalyn, Chelsea, Jenny, Meaghan & Jacquie (don’t drink the water around here guys) Thank you for teaching until you are about to literally pop. You inspire us to be healthy mind, body & spirit while you cultivate life inside of you. You ladies are much appreciated and we can’t wait to meet your little ones.
To our entire staff: You are the heartbeat of our studios. Your enthusiasm, dedication, willingness to learn and be open is what makes Mind Body Barre the place that it has become. I am forever grateful for all that you do for us. Watching you live with passion, integrity and excitement for your teaching while deepening your spiritual practice is an absolute honor.
To every single person that may have gone unmentioned, to all the women who inspire me in their fitness studio ventures (Tanya, Julia, Jenny --there are so many of us I want to name you all) to the Patriots Cheerleaders Coach Ms. Tracy Sormanti for teaching me that being on time is late, To the POUND HQ for believing in us as Master Pros, Tony D. for helping a cute little Staples girl make an effing kick ass logo, and to Inspired Technology for letting me call you when there is a problem (guys I don’t recommend trying to install your own sound equipment--I have had sleepless nights over this). To BUTI Yoga for opening our eyes to the world of Yoga and inspiring us into the practice. To Betty & Kevan and everyone at STIL Yoga, thank you for your mentorship.
And lastly, to all of our clients: THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for choosing us. Thank you for your support and for the community you have created within each of our studios. Thank you for your compassion and kindness to each and every one of our instructors and to one another. Thank you for knowing that Kayla and I are crazy enough to run through class in an ice-cream truck or show up wearing sombreros with margaritas and you just go with it. Your sense of humor and openness has allowed us to share in all the gifts you have created in our space.
I can’t believe it’s been 5 years. As we continue to grow, evolve and expand I don’t know what the future will hold but I do know that it was important that you know we didn’t do it alone.
So Much Love,
You know we’re no good, we’re no good, we’re no good, baby we’re no good--WITHOUT OUR AMAZING STAFF & INSTRUCTORS!
Skip the small talk here, we’re cutting to the chase today, this post is all about how incredible our bad-ass staff really is!
Did you know that collectively we offer 63 classes a week at a minimum!? Can you imagine if we taught all those classes---well, we’d be no good! We’d be tired, really tired--unable to function and give you the very best of us.
So, today we think it’s important to shout out to the ladies who keep the show-a-runnin’ 24/7 (quite literally sometimes!) And in case we don’t say it enough, these women are extremely talented, funny, smart, unique, genuine, dedicated and hardworking. Most have full time jobs, some mothers (and moms-to-be!) and dedicate their free time to kickin’ your butt kindly.
So, from the bottom of our hearts, Much love to our staff and to you too! <3

We know what it's like to juggle one million things, so we totally understand if you have to leave during the cool down! You're busy bees and we respect that! We are lucky enough to have the most kind, considerate clients so here are some ways you can help MBB out: Channel your inner super hero and FLASH, try and quietly skip out before the lights shut off. We won't time you or anything but we know you're pretty fast you bad ass. Don't wipe down/put your mat away if leaving early for cooldown. You're too sweet, we appreciate this so much but it can often be a distraction to those being cooled down. The instructor will take care of it for you, we got your back!
We also know that sometimes things come up and you just can't make it here. Hopefully it's surprise parties and last minute dinner invites more often than the common cold and traffic. (We can dream right?) We just ask that you late/cancel online rather than "no show" so others have the opportunity to get into class/ the instructor knows ahead of time. If you keep getting repeatedly thrown surprise parties and dinners, number one, we are jealous, and number two, try and be respectful of how many times you late cancel. We try to be as understanding as possible, but must abide our policy.
We recognize that it can be hard to plan out which classes to take and when to fit them into your schedule, especially early morning class times. Sometimes getting out of our cozy bed is hard to doooooo. (channeling our inner Whitney) Please be sure to sign up for class ahead of time and to not just "show up" because you weren't sure if you would make it the night before. You got this!
Weappreciate (oh hey that's the promo code for 15% off your next purchase) your cooperation and your business!
Promo Code Details: Valid on 5,10 or 20 regularly priced class packages. Must be redeemed by 1/31/2015.

What do you do when you want to sit on the couch, eat cookies, drink wine, and cry? Easy. Sit on the couch, eat cookies, drink wine, cry. To some this may sound quite miserable, and maybe even a little sad, but I swear, it’s good stuff. Yup, UH-mazing; now before you all start feeling really bad for me and begin to question if I’ve been spending too much time home alone with my dog, let me explain..
As someone who strives to live their life in a spiritual way, you may be surprised to find that I don’t sit around all day chanting mantras, loven’ on angels, making magic wishes made of fairy dust, and pooping rainbows. I know, I’m just as upset as you are. The truth is, while I do love a good mantra it’s necessary to be sad sometimes. It’s important to honor your emotions, all of them, as there is a balance to everything in life. Being spiritual is so much more than maintaining a positive attitude, it’s finding beauty and value in your less than desirable moments. It’s not just feeling it, it’s figuring out where it came from, why, and how to move past it.
The “feel your shit” talk...what does that mean? That sounds terrible, unless we’re talking about the rainbows from earlier, I’m really all set. But seriously, can we change it to “Address your shit?” If we all just sat around “feeling our stuff” (keep it PG people) - we’d never get anywhere. What if we started feeling and DOING things about it? It’d be hard and might take time, a few mistakes, and some serious effort along the way, but changes would most certainly occur. Sometimes that hour on the couch is a healthy get-away because it creates an action step for positive change. Sometimes expressing sadness or anger is the most positive movement forward. It’s allowing all of the “icky/sticky” stuff we experience to move through us, not consume us. Sadness is real and yes, it can really suck but it’s also quite valuable. Let it drive you, not define you.
Let’s get this straight, it’s ok to throw yourself a pity party, just make sure it’s not an all nighter. Don’t mask the less than desirable thoughts or happenings in your life with sunshine and giggles, it won’t make them go away any faster. People who are on the spiritual path have bad days, they become frustrated, they eat cookies on the couch. They feel their ish and they do something about it. So next time you’re feeling down in the dumps, let it happen captain! You never know what kind of life change can come from a pint of ice cream and a season of New Girl ;)
You may have noticed the headlines blowing up your newsfeed lately, "Lose 5 lbs in 3 Days!, New Juice Cleanse will restore your body, Slim Down in 3 Days!"
Whatever the slogan, you have to admit, it's all pretty catchy. In fact, so catchy that something caught my "anti-lose-weight" eye and found me standing in front of my bathroom mirror scantily-clad "sucking in" while turning side to side, puffing out my chest and saying, "Maybe I have gained a few pounds..."
I decided to step on the scale (something I NEVER do because quite frankly, I've always felt pretty comfortable and confident with my body). I'm not nearly the 106 lb, 18 year old, blonde-cupcake cheerleader I used to be. In fact, I'm quite the opposite, 119lbs with purple hair to boot.
All in instant it seemed like I'd somehow gained 13lbs overnight. What surprised me the most was how quickly I was letting my mind wander down a road I've spent my entire career teaching others not to go down. And so there I was, completely ignoring the fact that the last time I was at 106 lbs was almost more than ten years ago, and here I was the strongest I've ever felt and eating healthier than I ever have.
I hated to think I would sucuumb to one of America's marketing shams like the slogans above. I was intrigued though, and decided to set out on a "detox" journey that would help me see if the "weight" I had gained would slip away on one of these miracle detoxes. I did some serious research, and went with something that resonated with my philosophies---Bonus: I had also previously emailed with the author of this book and she was super helpful!
The 3 Day Detox comes from "THE PLAN" by Lyn Genet (You can read more here)
This detox is a 3-day “anti-inflammatory cleanse” developed by Lyn-Genet Recitas, a holistic nutritionist. The philosophy is that certain foods can be reactive in our bodies, so by eliminating all potentially reactive foods and slowly reintroducing them, we can determine what foods will be tolerated in our bodies. It should also be noted that there are NO supplements, no "miracle" shakes or pills. You are given certain foods that are less reactive in the body and purchase them from the grocery store. (All in for 3 days cost me about $75 due to not having all ingredients in my cupboard) It should also be noted that I didn't exercise until Day 3 (Lyn actually says exercising can totes mess with your results and advises you NOT to...but I could never let my MBB peeps down!)
Here's what I found:
Day One: 121 lbs. Unable to drink coffee, not even decaf. #ihateeveryone and I mean #everyone... I had the worst headache, I felt like I was coming down with a flu and spent the entire day on the couch. Anytime I would get up, it felt like the entire room was spinning. Is this what drugs feel like? The Plan keeps me full, I'm not hungry one bit, but my craving for sugar is out of this world. #iwillnotcave
Day Two: 119 lbs. Still craving caffeine, but thankfully today no headache. I make it through the entire day, but it's my sister's birthday and I totally cave in and eat cake. My entire world lights up and my taste-buds explode in delicious satisfaction. Now I'm a sad-sally and feel like I've done something "bad".
Day Three: 117 lbs. How the hell is that possible? I've literally done "nothing" in the past few days, and I cheated. (I must say I did have a reaction to adding sugar back in like that the night before, feel free to ask me!) I decide to finish the day and feel the best I have felt in a long time. No bloating and no headaches.
It felt great to see a correlation to the foods I regularly eat and how they were making me feel. Eating foods should be something we do consciously, to enjoy--not eating rice cakes to stay thin. I must add that while I did drop a few lbs, I usually fluctuate between 118-120 with exercise and eating foods I still love anyway. What was most interesting, was understanding how I FELT on these "detox" foods vs. more "reactive" "healthy" foods I love (eggs, granola, strawberries and fish).
It does seem that Lyn is really onto something. Eating food should be enjoyable. In fact, she encourages cheese, wine AND chocolate--but it's important to learn how our bodies react to the environment and the situations we make by CHOICE.
So, I'm sorry to trick you into reading this article, making you think there is some miracle detox that will change your life in 3 days. The truth is, there is no miracle cleanse, there is no miracle workout. It takes knowing yourself on a deeper level and creating a pathway for communication with your mind, body & spirit. Each of us are on an individual journey, and what may work for one person may not work for another. Your body is one small piece of the puzzle. So I stand by my anti-weight-loss attitude and reassure you that if your energy is in a balanced space, your mind will be, and when your mind is balanced, your body will be too. It's a cycle that cannot fail you.
All in all, I feel great--and I needed a kick in the ass to make me understand and realize that I truly love my body and that I am going to live every moment and make decisions that feel good in my body that will be long-lasting--not some miracle fix or fad workout because my newsfeed told me so. I'm keeping my energy clear.
It comes with great excitement and honor to announce we will be hosting an Official Mind Body Barre Instructor Training in NY this coming Fall!
