Yesterday I came across this article. It led me on a little “curiosity” tour to visit the American Sports & Fitness Association website.
It seems pretty straightforward, in just a few simple clicks, you can become just about any top-notch trainer in the fitness industry, alongside becoming a health club manager or childhood obesity specialist, all with a passing score…and better yet…you don’t even have to pay until you pass!
The best part comes next, if you get every True/False question on the test wrong, you can go back…see the answers you got wrong and then correct them!
Why did I waste four years of college in health related field, weeks of studying for a practical and written fitness exam, prenatal/postnatal application along with my CPR/AED/First Aid among other numerous certs when I could have simply gone to this website!?
The obvious truth is….I guess I am pretty appalled that this is even happening, and I feel more badly for the people who are paying places like this for these so called “certifications”. The people receiving those certifications either A. do not have the knowledge to know any better, or B. are looking for a "quick" certification so they do not need to spend the hours of studying followed by a lengthy & challenging group, individual, practical and written certification course--all which they must pass in order to be recognized by ASCM (American Sports College of Medicine).
Either way, do you want that person to have your life in their hands?
Yes, I am an entrepreneur/business owner, but beyond that…my first priority in the health & fitness industry is to give our clients what they deserve, the best possible education I can receive…because in turn their care is in our hands. As a result, I'd like to take a moment to thank our staff for continuing their education everyday, and continuing to stay up on the latest and most important research the industry has to offer. As many of you know, above the pre-requisites for our training, all of our staff receive hours of practical application and training in the Mind Body Barre® method hours before teaching at our facility.
As from a previous blog post:
If you have been taking MBB, you know about the importance of stretching and the reasons the body will benefit from flexibility. It offers more than just a few benefits; decreased risk of injury, improved posture, reduced muscle soreness, and a decreased risk of lower back pain. And BONUS- a stretched & flexible muscle is exceptionally stronger than a tight muscle. Plus, the intervals of raising the heart rate and slowing it down through stretch and breath-work allow the body to raise its metabolic rate! What does that mean? You burn calories while your sleeping (Yeah, we’re that good!)
We work the muscles to the point of fatigue, shaking and trembling (sounds great right!? Just kidding, we know it burns like you know what!). But it is that very “shaking” that allows us to sculpt, tone, firm and reveal the beautiful and strong, sleeker, leaner YOU!
To understand why Mind Body Barre will sculpt your physique we must first understand the scientific reasoning of how it works…the “stuff”. If you have taken class, you begin to notice that your muscles will first lift up and seem to be fuller. Did you know your muscles are mostly composed of water? That’s right! And your muscles absorb the water as your body becomes more active. Through using the method your muscles become denser and over a period of three-to-five months, those muscles begin to compact themselves (Lengthening, Strengthening, Tightening, and Toning!). Over this period of time your muscles will firm up around the underlying bones, and the inter-muscular fat will burn away, revealing a trimmed down shape. (Who said Physiology of Anatomy wasn’t fun!?)
But what is it that makes all this SO effective? Is it really the elements of strength training, of “pumping” the muscles? If you know our class and our method, you know that the mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. Yes it’s true! We work through the physical aspect of whole body wellness through connecting the mind, body and spirit. The power of visualization, creating what it is we want creates the existence of what we have.
When the workout is burning, your heart rate is pumping and breath work becomes vital. Learning to slow down the breath, even while doing high intensity workouts, can help you gain a better and more effective workout. Why? Because you are getting oxygen to those muscle fibers! Allowing yourself to become "breathless" at any point during your workout undermines your breathing coordination and you burn sugar instead of fat for fuel. You can also become tight and tense (which can promote injury), and, in general, undermine your endurance and stamina.
And if you haven’t tried any of our classes yet, while we can’t give away all our secrets, we can tell you that as a person choosing an identity of total body wellness, you are already in an elite percentile.
Here at Mind Body Barre we encourage you to ask questions, to do research on your own, try to new things and challenge ideas and belief systems. The INTEGRITY of our teachings is most important.
Here is a tid-bit of advice for choosing a workout regimen, instructor or a new idea- always check the credibility of source. Where is the information coming from? Are the instructors knowledgeable, credible or certified? Is the company, class or corporation an example and true representation of total body fitness? Where does the research come from? We like to read up on scientific studies, but make sure your resources aren’t skewed! We like American College of Sports Medicine.
Here are some examples; there are many certifications out there. Using Yoga as an example, there are some programs that can be done in one day and online believe it or not. Unfortunately the Yoga Alliance approves those certifications as RYTs. Other trainings can take up to 2 years of practical theorem and research, learning the anatomy of the body and insertion points of the muscles. There are classes you can take in a gym that solely focus on stretching and breathing, while others focus on a more Eastern philosophy of yoga, quieting the mind. Which would you choose?
It’s up to YOU to learn the connection between mind, body and spirit. It’s up to YOU to learn the tools to create the beautiful and strong, sleeker, leaner YOU; not the person you strive to be, but the person you already are, waiting to be freed.
Take a Class!
