How does the weekend go by so quickly!? What a gorgeous fall weekend it was. I had to make this quick post to let all my MBB clients know how proud you are all making me! Saturday was a SOLD OUT (Great Job!!!) 8:30am barre class followed by our first ever Basic Self Defense Workshop for Women.
The workshop was in perfect timing for the upcoming holiday season. Many of us will be out shopping, walking to our cars late at night with bags in hand, and this was a great reminder to boost our awareness especially when walking alone. Special Thanks to Fitness Mom® Julie Sweet for teaching us the basics. It was an eye opening experience that all women should take full advantage of. The primary misconception is to think that if the attacker is bigger than you, you won’t be able to defend yourself. We can all see that our instructor, Julie, is the most petite thing ever, but those moves she showed us were proof that size doesn’t matter! I’m looking forward to the next workshop we will hold. If you missed this one, no worries, there will be more!
Last week I had the pleasure of actually taking a class rather than teaching one (I know! Awesome!) Our Yoga instructors, Kerrie and Julie are fantastic and I really encourage each of you try Yoga out. You can use any of your class credits toward any one of our fitness classes.
In a recent conversation with one of my clients we got onto the subject of yoga, and I asked her why she hadn’t tried it yet, her response?
“I’m not that flexible!”
Which brings me to my very next point, I was racking my brain wondering why people weren’t trying yoga- Are you scared of trying something new? Are you afraid that you will look “foolish” in class? Do you think your flexibility level matters in a yoga class?
The answers to these questions are simple: Yoga is not about flexibility, it is not about being a “pro” and it is not about looking perfect. I am humbled everytime by what yoga teaches. Yoga is about trusting; it is about slowing down the breath and connecting your body to align your sense of being. It is also about surrendering the ego, the part of us that says, “Who do you think you are?” Learn to kick the ego to the curb, and replace it will love and trust. We have so much to offer and so much to learn, why not learn through the practice of honoring your divine essence? If you love the end of my classes (Lavender Cool Down) you are going to love yoga, and I promise you this: I will never have something on my schedule that I don’t believe in. You will never see a workout that I don't think will benefit you.
Our next Yoga Classes are as follows:
Wednesday Nov. 16th 9:30am
Thursday Nov. 17th 7:15pm
Friday Nov. 18th 5:30pm (re-energize before your weekend!)
In looking at the MINDBODY Scheduler over the next few weeks, I am seeing that classes are already filling up! This is fantastic! Signing up for classes holds you accountable for yourself and shows me that you are all committed to achieving your fitness goals; but most importantly it shows me that you are dedicating one hour to the well being of your mind, body & spirit.
When I opened Mind Body Barre™ I wanted it to be a safe haven where people could retreat from their everyday lives and spend time reconnecting and realigning their being. If you have taken my class, you know and understand why I am the broken record of “love yourself, honor yourself and take time for yourself”. It is so important that we take time each day to recognize the divine light in each of us. Minutes of your life will go by, and you will never get them back; we must learn to empower each other and lift each other up, for our highest and best. Most importantly, we must find what makes our lights shine brighter. I feel so connected to all of you. So, when I login into my scheduler I am so excited to see you all in class and to not only help you achieve your fitness goals, but to also challenge you to challenge yourself.
Have a fantastic week and I’ll see you all in the studio!
I want to thank all of you who attended last night’s gathering. As many of you know, I believe that there is special purpose and intention in all that exists.
In the time I had spent dreaming up Mind Body Barre™, I had never imagined the magnitude of what it has already become. Laughably, I had dreamed it to be a place for fitness alone. It just goes to show that each of us has a divine plan that we sometimes cannot understand until it happens. This has become my place of trust and love, a place where I learn more about myself everyday with each of you, and we still have such a long journey together ahead. I am literally amazed every time I have a special connection with each of you; it never ceases to surprise me with wonderment. My work is truly magical and this is something I have never understood until now.
When I was a young child, I would play school all the time. I think I probably drove my mother crazy, making her take me to actual professional teacher stores to purchase teacher school supplies so that I could set up my own classroom at home. It was no surprise that I would always force my little sister to be the student, and me of course, the teacher. That was what I dreamed of as a child; that is what I wanted to be when I grew up, a teacher.
After taking my I See Your Dream Job certification with Sue Frederick, she expressed that whatever you play as a child is a great clue as to what your inner passion and purpose is. In society, we think so literal. One might interpret that I would grow up to be a school teacher just because I played it as a child. In looking at what the studio has become, I have to say, in another one of my moments of wonderment and awe I have realized, I am that teacher.
I am a teacher that continues to learn from all of you every day; the human mind has so much to learn, the soul has so much to know and share.
Indeed last night was emotional and touching to experience for all of us; a powerful reminder that we are an ethereal soul in a physical vehicle. There is cycle of death and rebirth and our spirit does live on, and our loved ones are always close.
I want to thank you for sharing your energy, for walking down your path and for continuing to teach the teacher.
Yesterday marked the 30 Day mark of Michelle’s (the winner of our LOVE your Body …Like Never Before) Challenge.
Michelle has become a vision of inspiration lately for all of us around here. In the past 30 days there has been a tremendous amount of commitment and dedication to this challenge.
Below are some excerpts from a weekly journal Michelle has been keeping about the challenge.
I have to be honest with you; I wasn’t quite sure about this blog thing! I won the love your body challenge at Mind Body Barre and I have to say it’s really hard to love your body when you’re not happy with it. However that is what this challenge is all about. I started this challenge on Monday Oct 10 and that is when I was introduced to the stride class. I have to say I absolutely LOVED it!! It was so much fun and it didn’t feel like a workout at all. So that was a great class to start off with because it just made me that more excited to go to my next class. It isn’t easy to get me excited about exercising.
I will tell you this, it isn’t easy having to drive 45 minutes to work, working 8 hrs and then driving 45 minutes to get home, having enough time to pee and back out the door to exercise but I forced myself to do it. I’m so glad I did!!
The day after the Stride class I was a bit sore. Mind you I haven’t worked out in 7 months so my body just isn’t use to this! I was so tired when I got home, all I had the energy for was to shower and go to bed. I took the Kardio sculpt the second night another great class! I wasn’t as tired, which leads me to believe it’s only up from here energy wise.
I have to say I feel great! I feel like I have a little more energy and that’s just after the first few days imagine how I will feel when I’ve been doing this exercise thing consistently for a month LOL!!! I am pleased with myself for now. It’s just baby steps but I know once this challenge is done I will feel much better about myself.
Okay so I made it through week 2!! The exercise portion is the easiest part of this challenge. I am absolutely loving the classes I ‘m taking. I really enjoy my time at Mind Body Barre! I feel so blessed to have won this challenge. There are no words to describe how nice it is to be around such supportive people. I look forward to sweating my butt off in class every week! I am making the most of this opportunity. I am so excited about this journey that I’ve started, I don’t want it to end!
I feel like I’m finally connecting with my body. It gets easier and easier to love the way I look! I’m feeling more energetic and happy. I was so tired all the time and just wanted to lay down and take a nap everyday. But even after I would wake from a nap I still felt so tired! Since I’ve started to exercise regularly I haven’t taken a nap when getting home. Don’t get me wrong I’m still getting tired but it’s a different kind of tired. I like it!
At the end of class Angela always does a 5 minute meditation segment. It’s amazing how calm and spiritually connected you feel in those 5 minutes. It brings so much peace to me for the rest of the night. I have been meditating for a little while now and I have to say it’s the best way to connect with yourself. It’s not always easy to quiet the thoughts in your mind but it does get easier with practice.
So far my biggest challenge is logging my food consistently and eating the way I should. I’m not doing too bad but I’m sure I could be making better choices. I just love my sweets and chocolate. Will power is the most difficult thing to maintain. I do find myself making better choice as the weeks go on but I do have my set backs. I have learned to not beat myself up when I make the wrong choice. I have learned to take one day at a time! I am the only one who can control me. I am looking forward to the coming weeks!
Week three has been completed! I cannot wait to see the progress I’m making. I feel amazing!! I can’t believe how much my energy level has increased. It is so great to get back into an exercise routine. The classes are so much fun and the people are warm and encouraging. I find myself rearranging my schedule so I can attend class. It’s so nice to put myself first for once!
One of my favorite parts of class is the last 5 minutes. We get a chance to meditate and cool down from the workout. It’s so nice to have this time to clear my mind and think about the rest of my day/night. With that being said I decided to bring my daughter to a class with me. She’s 13 and I thought it would be a good time to get her interested in a healthier life style. She is very active but doesn’t do anything consistently anymore. She thought this was going to be an easy class! She asked me what we did during class and I told her “It’s mostly strength training with small weights.” She said “ If you can do it mom I can do it.” LOL she is very competitive. She came to class with me on Saturday and she did a fantastic job. On the way home from class I asked her how she liked it. She said I liked it but it was harder than I thought it would be. That made me smile! She also said she would come back with me. I think this is a great start to some special bonding time with her. She is such a love to be around. My kids have been my main focus for so long I think it’s great that I can share this part of “doing me” with her. Hopefully she learns at an earlier age than I did that it’s important to take care of you and put yourself first. You can’t expect somebody else to put you first if you put yourself last!
Again my biggest challenge this week is logging my food. I’m not doing to bad with what I’m eating I just can’t find the time to sit down and log it. I’m also having a challenge with getting in 10,000 steps! I’ve been averaging about 5,000 a day along with taking 3-4 classes a week. I’m trying to make myself get up and move a little bit more! I only see this getting harder as the weather gets colder! I will keep a positive attitude about this and I will hit 10,000 at least once during this challenge LOL! This week is going to be great! I’ve signed myself up for 5 classes this week, let’s see how I hold up! I’m getting ready for my trip to Florida. I’m so excited about going where the sun and warmth is. I will let you know how this week goes for me! Happy Halloween everybody J
I can’t believe it’s already been 30 days since I started this challenge! I have mixed emotions about the upcoming event of measuring again!! LOL I know I’ve made progress I’m just scared it’s not going to be enough. I’ve been working my butt off to keep up with the classes and trying to eat right but I have had some setbacks. There are a few things I have noticed, I have more stamina in class and my clothes are fitting me better. I know I’m not supposed to be focused on the scale but I can’t help but weigh myself. I have to say I haven’t noticed much of a difference in my weight and I’m trying not to get discouraged. I have noticed that I have way more energy! I am so thankful for this opportunity and I am embracing everything as I go. I absolutely love the classes I’m taking and the people are so warm and encouraging.
I have to say I am very proud of myself, Halloween is a big candy day and I usually pig out!! LOL I love anything chocolate. This year I only had a few pieces and it that was satisfying enough. I didn’t even crave it. The other thing I’ve tried to stay away from is ice cream. I love ice cream!!! But I’m proud to say that since I’ve started this challenge I haven’t even craved it. For me if I start to eat it now I won’t be able to control myself and the cravings will come every day LOL. It’s just better for me to stay away from it right now. I have noticed that I’m making better food choices, although I still look at the bad things still. I break down every once in a while but for the most part I’m doing so much better with my relationship with food!
I’m feeling more connected with my body! I love this feeling! Have a great week J
Michelle has lost a total of 6.5 inches in the past 30 Days. (Insert Victory Dance!!!) The most important thing I have been learning myself throughout this process is that in life, we give so much of ourselves to others in relationships, that we often lose our own identities. We lose the meaning and essence of what makes us so vibrant, beautiful and full of life. To be willing to take back your personal power and reconnect yourself to the divine essence of who you are is the most powerful step forward on our journeys. Michelle is an inspiration to all of us, to be gentle with our progress and to learn to love ourselves for who we really are at the end of the day; to be able to look in the mirror and say, “I really love who you are, and who you are becoming.”
Take a Class!
