A few years ago I worked part time for a produce supplier. Every year there was a swanky dinner dance and business event at the Royal Sonesta in Boston. I’ve always loved big events like that, getting all dressed up in a cocktail dress, eating everything in sight (they always have the best dessert table) and my favorite, the chance to take home the beautifully adorned centerpiece.
At any event I have ever been to, from proms to weddings to business events, I somehow weasel my way into getting the centerpiece (must be that Gemini charm I have), and so I did. When the night ended I brought the roses to my room. Those flowers brought me so much joy to look at, they were so alive, deep with red and brought a sense of peace and calm. There was really something quite special about them—I mean they were just ordinary roses, right?
The next morning, after checking out of my hotel room, dress and bags in hand (I probably had too many bags for one overnight stay…but hey who’s counting?) I noticed that I would most likely need to take two trips if I was going to safely bring the centerpiece to my car; which was entirely another matter I would need to approach shortly—just how was I going to get them in my car without spilling water all over the seats and without ruining them?
On my last trip to the car, roses in hand, I darted past the lobby to make the elevator. I’m sure I looked completely ridiculous (in a Peg Bundy sort of way) trotting through the lobby in my high heels, trying not to fall over as I carry this massive centerpiece. Now, you know in the movies when everything suddenly becomes like a slow motion picture? All of my senses became magnified and it was as if I could only direct my attention to a family sitting in the lobby to my left.
There was a woman sitting with her two small children, who were surprisingly well behaved. As I kept walking I noticed her eyes light up and her head literally turned as I walked further. I got all the way to elevator and thought to myself, “What joy will these flowers honestly bring me?” I turned around and walked back toward her and said, “Here, these are for you—You will enjoy them much more than I will…”
She was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude and I could feel her heart fill with love, as did mine. There really was something very special about those roses.
Hello MBB’ers! Let’s jump right into what’s been going on at MBB™
As many of you know, I just got back from vacation. We spent 5 sunny (warm!) days on the beautiful island and I decided to take up a client dare: Planking on the beach—not the worldwide game that’s been going on, but a real fitness plank! (Cathy, one of our clients, noted that guy in the back was attempting side plank…)
Going away was the first time in over a year that I had been away from my computer, iPhone, iPad, iEverything and I didn’t look at them again until I got back. My boyfriend has told me that I am always attached to my phone, facebook or studio work. (He doesn’t have facebook/twitter and I honestly didn’t know how he went about life until last week!) I have to admit, it was kind of nice…although there were hundreds (not really) just a few times when I would try to pick up someone’s wifi on the beach to check my newsfeed….
With that said, I do encourage you to take a day where you shut off your phone, log off your computer and take in nature around you. Spend some time with friends (not on facebook!) and have dinner with family (not via skype!)
Getting away is necessary for everyone every once and a while.
