You may have noticed the headlines blowing up your newsfeed lately, "Lose 5 lbs in 3 Days!, New Juice Cleanse will restore your body, Slim Down in 3 Days!"
Whatever the slogan, you have to admit, it's all pretty catchy. In fact, so catchy that something caught my "anti-lose-weight" eye and found me standing in front of my bathroom mirror scantily-clad "sucking in" while turning side to side, puffing out my chest and saying, "Maybe I have gained a few pounds..."
I decided to step on the scale (something I NEVER do because quite frankly, I've always felt pretty comfortable and confident with my body). I'm not nearly the 106 lb, 18 year old, blonde-cupcake cheerleader I used to be. In fact, I'm quite the opposite, 119lbs with purple hair to boot.
All in instant it seemed like I'd somehow gained 13lbs overnight. What surprised me the most was how quickly I was letting my mind wander down a road I've spent my entire career teaching others not to go down. And so there I was, completely ignoring the fact that the last time I was at 106 lbs was almost more than ten years ago, and here I was the strongest I've ever felt and eating healthier than I ever have.
I hated to think I would sucuumb to one of America's marketing shams like the slogans above. I was intrigued though, and decided to set out on a "detox" journey that would help me see if the "weight" I had gained would slip away on one of these miracle detoxes. I did some serious research, and went with something that resonated with my philosophies---Bonus: I had also previously emailed with the author of this book and she was super helpful!
The 3 Day Detox comes from "THE PLAN" by Lyn Genet (You can read more here)
This detox is a 3-day “anti-inflammatory cleanse” developed by Lyn-Genet Recitas, a holistic nutritionist. The philosophy is that certain foods can be reactive in our bodies, so by eliminating all potentially reactive foods and slowly reintroducing them, we can determine what foods will be tolerated in our bodies. It should also be noted that there are NO supplements, no "miracle" shakes or pills. You are given certain foods that are less reactive in the body and purchase them from the grocery store. (All in for 3 days cost me about $75 due to not having all ingredients in my cupboard) It should also be noted that I didn't exercise until Day 3 (Lyn actually says exercising can totes mess with your results and advises you NOT to...but I could never let my MBB peeps down!)
Here's what I found:
Day One: 121 lbs. Unable to drink coffee, not even decaf. #ihateeveryone and I mean #everyone... I had the worst headache, I felt like I was coming down with a flu and spent the entire day on the couch. Anytime I would get up, it felt like the entire room was spinning. Is this what drugs feel like? The Plan keeps me full, I'm not hungry one bit, but my craving for sugar is out of this world. #iwillnotcave
Day Two: 119 lbs. Still craving caffeine, but thankfully today no headache. I make it through the entire day, but it's my sister's birthday and I totally cave in and eat cake. My entire world lights up and my taste-buds explode in delicious satisfaction. Now I'm a sad-sally and feel like I've done something "bad".
Day Three: 117 lbs. How the hell is that possible? I've literally done "nothing" in the past few days, and I cheated. (I must say I did have a reaction to adding sugar back in like that the night before, feel free to ask me!) I decide to finish the day and feel the best I have felt in a long time. No bloating and no headaches.
It felt great to see a correlation to the foods I regularly eat and how they were making me feel. Eating foods should be something we do consciously, to enjoy--not eating rice cakes to stay thin. I must add that while I did drop a few lbs, I usually fluctuate between 118-120 with exercise and eating foods I still love anyway. What was most interesting, was understanding how I FELT on these "detox" foods vs. more "reactive" "healthy" foods I love (eggs, granola, strawberries and fish).
It does seem that Lyn is really onto something. Eating food should be enjoyable. In fact, she encourages cheese, wine AND chocolate--but it's important to learn how our bodies react to the environment and the situations we make by CHOICE.
So, I'm sorry to trick you into reading this article, making you think there is some miracle detox that will change your life in 3 days. The truth is, there is no miracle cleanse, there is no miracle workout. It takes knowing yourself on a deeper level and creating a pathway for communication with your mind, body & spirit. Each of us are on an individual journey, and what may work for one person may not work for another. Your body is one small piece of the puzzle. So I stand by my anti-weight-loss attitude and reassure you that if your energy is in a balanced space, your mind will be, and when your mind is balanced, your body will be too. It's a cycle that cannot fail you.
All in all, I feel great--and I needed a kick in the ass to make me understand and realize that I truly love my body and that I am going to live every moment and make decisions that feel good in my body that will be long-lasting--not some miracle fix or fad workout because my newsfeed told me so. I'm keeping my energy clear.
